Some communities in Alaska are threatened to the point of extinction by the forces of climate change. So, being able to preserve the natural environment is an important part of indigenous life.

Some in Alaska continue a subsistence lifestyle, living off of the land and sea for survival. Sometimes these ways of life are threatened by outside commercial interests, like fishing or more in the case of Hawaii, real estate development.
