What does it mean to be Indigenous

This video references an exhibit on relations at the Institute of American Indian art museum in Santa Fe that took place in 2006.

Merriam-Webster dictionary offers this simple definition:

produced, living, or existing naturally in a particular region or environment

So, in a sense we are all indigenous with a unique genetic makeup, heritage, community, natural environment, and personality. Taking time to know hear stories about ourselves and others helps us to consider how we can grow in the way we express our creativity.

On other levels of dialogue, the meaning of being indigenous raises issues of sovereignty and ownership of property, removal and the Trail of Tears injustices done by governments under the banner of colonialism. And how do current issues like casinos impact local economies.

Take time to consider these topics with your students and follow the hyperlinks for ways to jumpstart a discussion about factors that influence identity.
